I checked out a few of the Central Aroostook county goose hangouts this afternoon and was surprised at the numbers of Canada Geese that lingered through last week's snow and near freeze up. 5,000+ were seen, with concentrations at Arnold Brook Lake, Hanson Lake and the mill pond in Limestone. I didn't find any unusual species of geese.
-- One noteworthy find was my first-of-fall Barrow's Goldeneye at the Caribou wastewater treatment ponds. Three female/first fall Barrow's were feeding in the sewage-y goodness with nearly 40 Common Goldeneyes in the north lagoon. Though not as easy to ID as the males, these birds were still quite distinguishable with smaller bills, steep/nearly vertical brows and wild, shaggy napes. Their eyes were far from golden... more like ivory.
Four Lesser Scaup and nine Ring-necked Ducks were also in the ponds and starting to get a bit tardy.
Earlier this week, Vickie Ketch alerted me to a late-lingering Great Blue Heron at Collins Pond in Caribou, so I stopped in to see if it was still around. It was. The young bird seemed to be enjoying the recent warm up and was basking in the late afternoon sun.
