[Maine-birds] Essex Street woods Possible Oriole

The kids and I took a walk, with our dog, around the Essex Street woods trail in Bangor,  yesterday about 3 pm.  A large group with a dog is not likely to find much, and while we did spot several pairs of mallards, that was about it, birdwise, except for some swooping tree swallows over the water and what my daughter believes was a Baltimore Oriole in someone's yard off Drew Lane.  I never saw it, so I can't confirm, but she knows an Oriole and she said it was black and orange.

However, I was very surprised to see a bat flying over the marsh.  It also hovered, reminiscent of a tern before it dives.  This was full daylight, and the bat seemed to be competing with the swallows.  I don't know much about bats, but I did not think they were abroad in midday.  Anyone know more about bats than I do?  I did see it well in my binoculars, but I couldn't spot much of a field mark.  It was just a brown bat, with visible ears, and about the same size as the swallows.
