Hey everyone:
First, there are just a few hours left to reach the threshold to ensure "A Birder's Guide to Everything" is played on 1 May at the Westbrook Cinemagic. So if you haven't reserved your tickets then please help us reach the goal by reserving a ticket at: http://www.tugg.com/events/8831 Back to the walk...
A strong wind limited birding at most of Gilsland Farm today but the protected pockets proved to be havens for the birds that were here.
The best spot today was around the Pond Meadow, protected from the wind and providing most of our species for the day. A dozen Palm Warblers with a couple Pine Warblers and a solo Blue-headed Vireo interspersed provided some welcome color, not to say anything against the American Goldfinches that are finally suiting up. A pair of American Crows were attempting to construct a nest in the blowing white pines along Moose Woods and quickly escorted a Red-tailed Hawk from the area.
Waterfowl was almost nonexistent along the river, as far as we could see. Strong gusts made for a quick walk of the meadows, forming quite a bit of chop and even whitecaps on the river.
We eventually ended the walk back at the pond where the 'bird-of-the-day' prize went to a Field Sparrow that Nancy spotted along the trail. There are only around four records in eBird for Field Sparrows at Gilsland Farm and it was a welcome patch bird for all of us today.
A complete checklist from the walk is available at: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S18054091
