Total observation time: 7.5 hours
Official Counter: Katrina Fenton
Observers: Dave Gulick, Don Thompson, Steve Barker
Visitors:
The hawkwatch had 65 visitors, a portion of the 150+ people at the summit
taking advantage of the nicest weather of school vacation week.
Weather:
Lots of sunshine in the morning with a sky traversed by a maze of
contrails. More clouds advanced from the south in the afternoon ahead of
tomorrow's weather. The wind was light all day, beginning from the NW and
becoming variable later on. A sea breeze kicked up towards the end of the
count, just strong enough to send hawkwatchers scrambling for an extra
layer but not strong enough to move the temperature down from the low 60s.
Raptor Observations:
It didn't take long before thermals sent raptors soaring almost beyond the
limits of sight. One of the closer birds of the day was a Broad-winged Hawk
drifting over the gap an hour-and-a-half into the count, our 4,000th
migrant to be counted this season. The afternoon was a neck-breaking search
for "pepper flecks" until the sea breeze sent a rush of birds overhead to
use a last bit of lift off the mountain.
Non-raptor Observations:
Swallows were swirling all over the sky today, dashing low over the summit
and spiraling up until they were almost invisible. Most of the avian
Bradbury regulars kept a low profile today with all the hikers, families,
and dogs out enjoying the day.
Non-raptor Migrants:
Double-crested Cormorant- 43 Common Loon- 1
Tree Swallow- 188 Barn Swallow- 1
Predictions:
Tomorrow the temperature will drop back down to the mid-40s with overcast
skies and a light wind out of the ESE. Right now, it doesn't look like
we're in for an all day rain event, but there may be some showers to dodge
in the afternoon.
