- There was a young drake King Eider off Pemaquid Point this afternoon. It was diving and foraging in active surge water and waves right up against the rocks, ca 1/2 mile E of the Lighthouse. Its yellow, smooth bill was the most observable feature at a distance. In addition to other expected diving birds, there was a close-knit clump of 8 Com Loons, mostly just idling through. Don't recall seeing that before.
- Off Ocean Front (East Boothbay) there were two lumps of shorebirds; after a long dry spell (for me) of not seeing any groups of shorebirds (incl. at Dyer Pt.). 12 Dunlins were loafing, but then aroused by a passing flock of ca. 65 Purple Sandpipers. Together they all flew from perch to perch, eventually disappearing around the corner to the East. Although the hab. seems ideal, I believe those are the first Purple Sands for me at this spot. Among the diving ducks was a single Barrow's G-Eye, drake.
- Also in the area (off King Philip Trail), was a DCCormorant (photo'd). This sp. has wintered hereabouts in years past. This one's face was very red.
