[Maine-birds] Baird's Sandpiper at Addison Salt Ponds

We had great close-up views of a Baird's Sandpiper at high tide today at the Addison salt ponds near the Pleasant River Bridge.  And just as we discovered what might have been a Western Sandpiper all the peeps rose in the air as a Merlin chased them out of the ponds - so we'll  never know.....

The Merlin chased a peep for an excruciatingly long three minutes over the salt marshes and the river, under the bridge and back up in to the sky - around and around.  We followed the chase with binoculars and were impressed with the Merlin's speed and agility.  The Merlin really closed in on the peep over the river and both birds disappeared as they flew against a back drop of two tall conifers at the house just right across the bridge from the salt ponds.  What happened??  Another mystery to add to the "coulda-been" Western Sandpiper!

No American Avocet along the Pleasant River mudbanks today.
