[Maine-birds] Additional Highlights This Week, etc, 6/6-12.

 Hi all,

A few other sightings of note over the past seven days for me included the following:
- 14 Alder Flycatchers, Bradbury-Pinelands Corridor Trail, Pownal, 6/6 (with Saturday Morning Birdwalk group).
- 50 White-winged Scoters, 30 Black Scoters, 4 Surf Scoters, and 1 LONG-TAILED DUCK, Pine Point Beach, Scarborough, 6/7 (with a client).
- 1 Merlin, over I-295 at Exit 9 in Portland, 6/8 and over Back Cove on 6/9 (with Luke Sietz). I've observed a Merlin or two regularly in this area, roughly between Mackworth Island and Back Cove for the last several summers. I suspect they are breeding nearby, but I have yet to figure out where.
- Rangely area, 6/8-9 with another client yielded 1 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, 1 Mourning Warbler, 1 Olive-sided Flycatcher(FOY), lots of Yellow-bellied Flycatchers (FOY), etc.
- 20+ Black Terns and x Purple Martins, Messalonskee Lake, Belgrade, 6/9 (with a client; see below).
- 1 CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, Waterboro Barrens Preserve, Shapleigh, 6/11. The bird was singing in a scrubby area a few hundred yards past the gate from the preserve's main entrance area at the end of Buff Brook Rd.

- And finally, many of us have enjoyed the Purple Martins on Depot Road in Belgrade over the years. In recent years, you may have noticed the houses have fallen into disrepair, and some are on their very last legs. Thanks to a generous donation, Don Mairs and I, along with the help of many others, have begun a plan to refurbish and expand the colony. If you have visited this popular site in the last few weeks, you may have noticed the brand new gourd array that is the first phase of our project.  The whole story has been posted on my blog, here:
