[Maine-birds] Acadia assistance

I have been asked to forward a plea for assistance from Maine Search and Rescue. If anyone plans to bird Acadia soon, keep your eyes open  while scanning the cliffs for peregrines or for any unusual vulture activity.

This winter, Tim Philpott's vehicle was found abandoned at the Parkman Mountain parking area off

Route 198 in Mt. Desert on January 12th. Philpott was described as a white man, 5'9", 150 pounds and was last seen wearing a black jacket.  Although no confirmed physical clues of his presence in the park have been found after extensive searching, he may have been hiking areas near Sargent Mountain the afternoon he left his vehicle.

Many areas in this vicinity are steep with cliffs and inaccessible areas.  The Park would like to enlist the help of bird watchers visiting the park to look for any evidence of Mr. Philpott on the cliff faces and to report to the park locations where turkey vultures and other scavenging birds are especially active.  Scavenging birds will concentrate, perch in trees or land on the ground near food sources rather than soaring and moving widely which is their normal behavior when looking for food.

Contact numbers for information or to report any sightings of evidence or scavenger activity would be:
