[Maine-birds] Historic Scoter Migration at Schoodic Point

Just before noon today Earl Johnson, the Migration Monitor Technician at Schoodic Institute,
texted to alert me, "Insane scoter day. 5K plus birds easily."  (He had been counting since daybreak).
With that message, I hustled from a meeting in Ellsworth back to join him at Schoodic Point by 1 PM.
By 3:30 PM the flight was pretty much over.
Our preliminary results:  Black Scoter 5,886; Surf Scoter 878; White-winged Scoter 323; Scoter sp. 18,766

TOTAL  SCOTER COUNT =  25,853 !

It was a blustery SW wind between 10-18 mph all day. The wind velocity may have had a lot to do with keeping
the birds relatively close to our location on Schoodic Point. Days with winds from the southwest have annually produced the most days with flight totals exceeding 1000. This is a mega day for us!
