There were many highlights on our recent NJ Audubon trip to Monhegan Island - Sept. 21 - 26, including 20 species of warbler and a number of vagrants, among the 102 bird species recorded. Listing below. Notable were the Double-crested Cormorant nests (at least three) below Whitehead that still contained young (7 young in the 3 nests), something I have never seen at this late date. The butterflies were exceptional, with many species present, but the 1,000+ Monarchs stole the show. Single Minke Whales were seen on the way out on 9/21, from Lobster Cove on 9/24, and the way back on 9/26.
The Monhegan Birds WhatsApp group worked well, with postings being sent/received on numerous occasions. Although concerns about reception on the island sometimes are an issue, we found that in most cases it was not a problem and the alerts went through right away. Another advantage of being in the group is that you are notified of unusual birds timely, even if you aren't on the island. As always, seeing friends and fellow birders/butterfliers on the island is part of the specialness of Monhegan.
