Several birders have brought to my attention the Boom Rd location in Saco along the Saco River recently. Pat Moynahan got me most interested in this place by telling me that she counted 77 Wood Ducks there yesterday. I could not believe that I counted 97 of them on my visit this afternoon! I have never seen anywhere close to this amount of this species in one location. I would bet that I missed several birds while counting as there are many hiding spots out there and the wind was blowing hard straight into my face.
Lots of birds here today including 4 American Wigeons, 2 Northern Pintails, 15-20 or better Green-Winged Teals, lots of Mallards, Black Ducks, and Canada Geese. Also a good flock of about 1000 blackbirds were present as well as 2 Bald Eagles (1 adult and 1 3-4 year old bird). An American Kestrel was hunting the field opposite the road from the river.
Bird haahd,
