Observation end time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Katrina Fenton
Observers: Derek Lovitch, Steve Barker, Zane Baker
Visitors:
32.
Weather:
The east wind shifted around to blow lightly, but persistently from the
southeast, straight off the frosty Atlantic. Mostly cloudy skies gradually
became overcast as the stratus thickened to choke out the sunlight.
Temperatures reached the low 40's before being sent back down to the 30s.
Raptor Observations:
For the fourth day in a row, migrants were faced with less than ideal
weather. Birds grown impatient found slanted thermals and worked their way
north. An immature Red-tailed Hawk chose to spend part of the day with the
local Turkey Vulture flock, though a vigilant Mourning Dove wasn't fooled
by the one bird with a dihedral that didn't quite fit in.
Non-raptor Observations:
A Pine Warbler left the shelter of its namesake trees and perched briefly
in the nearby birches, festooned in its lemon and lime colored finery in an
otherwise drab day.
Non-raptor Migrants:
Double-crested Cormorant- 6 warbler sp.- 2
American Goldfinch- 2 Purple Finch- 7
Predictions:
Mostly sunny skies will be left in the wake of tonight's cold front. The
wind will be out of the northwest at 15-25mph, increasing through the
afternoon. Temperatures could reach the mid-50s, not counting the wind
chill. At this point, a change in the weather is good, though winds that
strong will prove a challenge for migrants.
