Weather:
The sky cleared quickly this morning, then cumulus clouds billowed in from
the northwest, providing a perfect sky for hawkwatching. Temperatures
warmed into the low 50s, a nice change of pace from the 30s and 40s of the
last few days. The wind was out of the northwest, growing into a gusty
15-20mph+ force that deterred all but the most determined migrants.
Raptor Observations:
The morning began on a promising note, with 3 Sharp-shinned Hawks rising
together in a thermal, followed by a steady procession of Broad-winged
Hawks. By the afternoon, most of the smaller raptors had made themselves
scares, leaving Ospreys to buck in the wind on their way north.
Non-raptor Observations:
Non-raptor Migrants:
Mallard- 7 Double-crested Cormorant- 10
Tree Swallow: (northbound)- 14 (southbound)- 2
American Robin- 4 Brown-headed Cowbird- 1
Predictions:
Clear skies are in the forecast for tomorrow, along with temperatures again
in the 50s. The wind will be out of the northeast to start, before a light
sea breeze blown in for the afternoon. Lighter winds should mean more
migrants, and a south wind in the second half of the day could make for a
good flight.
