Visitors:
12 people visited the hawkwatch today. Thanks for all your help finding
migrants, and for bringing cookies and chocolate to keep moral high!
Weather:
A clear and sunny morning suddenly grew overcast, then cleared just as
abruptly late in the afternoon. The wind began the day out of the north and
east, before a sea breeze kicked up around mid-day, sending a flurry of
migrants overhead and hawkwatchers diving for their jackets. Temperatures
rose to the low 40s before the cloud cover and wind sent them back to the
bottom half of the 30s. Most of the ice has melted from the summit, but
shadier areas of the trails have a little ways to go before they're easily
passable.
Raptor Observations:
With multiple Ospreys and double-digit Northern Harriers, it must be April!
Raptor numbers peaked sharply for two hours in the middle of the day, then
fell back as the sea breeze moved birds further inland and the overcast
shut down the thermals. Many birds were coming in though the gap, starkly
silhouetted against a steely sky.
Non-raptor Observations:
The day list hit 40 species of birds for the first time this season.
First-of-year Tree Swallows and Dark-eyed Juncos were making their way
north, and a skein of Brant was a welcome addition to the hawkwatch's list
of migrants. There were high numbers for many species, including nearly 40
Great-blue Herons, one flock containing 13 birds.
Non-raptor Migrants:
Canada Goose- 1,614 Brant- 14 Common Merganser- 25
American Black Duck- 20 Mallard- 11 duck sp.- 30
Great Blue Heron- 38 Killdeer- 48 shorebird sp.- 1
Horned Lark- 18 Tree Swallow- 2 American Robin- 1,537
Dark-eyed Junco- 25 Red-winged Blackbird- 50
Common Grackle- 193 Brown-headed Cowbird- 7
blackbird sp.- 559 Purple Finch- 8
American Goldfinch- 8 finch sp.- 6 passerine sp.- 3
Predictions:
More sun tomorrow, with partly cloudy skies clearing over the course of the
day. The wind will be out of the northwest at 5-10mph, and temperatures
should rise into the 40s. It looks like another good day to be at the
hawkwatch, though there may be fewer birds thanks to the northerly bent of
the wind.
