Visitors:
The hawkwatch's 9 visitors all left with good views of great birds. Thanks,
everyone who was a part of today!
Weather:
It didn't take long before the wind grew out of the south from a soft
whisper to a tree-shaking gusty siege on anything not tied down.
Temperatures made it up to around 50 and held steady despite the fresh air
off the ocean. High, wispy clouds stretched overhead by late morning,
providing relief from the stark blue void that was much appreciated.
Raptor Observations:
For the second day in a row, 200+ migrating raptors passed by the
hawkwatch. Hawks, falcons, and Ospreys caught lift and surfed the wind,
streaking by in well-executed tucks. A Northern Harrier took offence at a
Red-tailed Hawk using the same thermal and chased it out in a long-winged
Sharp-shinned Hawk impression. At 3:45p.m, a white bird showed up against a
distant cloud, then powered high across the blue- a Snowy Owl retreating
north with the line of ice and snow.
Non-raptor Observations:
There was more action from non-raptors early in the day, though a Dark-eyed
Junco feud livened it up a bit in the afternoon. The title of "Hawkwatch
Junco" may be changing hands....
Non-raptor Migrants:
Double-crested Cormorant- 7 Canada Goose- 68
Common Merganser- 8 Mallard- 4 Great Blue Heron- 3
Tree Swallow- 16 American Robin- 22
Red-winged Blackbird- 2 blackbird sp.- 76
American Goldfinch- 1 Purple Finch- 2
finch sp.- 2 passerine sp.- 1
Predictions:
A little rain early on should clear in time for the hawkwatch, leaving
clouds to break apart to allow the sun to warm temperatures to around 60.
The wind will be out of the west at 10-15mph. There's a good chance we'll
have another solid day for migrants!
