For the third straight spring, I have been venturing around the Scarborough Marsh on the right late afternoon in which many flocks of Red-Winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles, and Brown-Headed Cowbirds converge into a massive flock in the industrial park off Rte 1 adjacent to the marsh. This may occur on more than one afternoon, of course, but I happen to be there once a year when it happens. 5,000-8,000 blackbirds lined trees shoulder to shoulder and more were still coming when I had to go.
Speaking of large numbers, I wonder how many American Robins were seen in the state today? I had over 100 today at work and when travelling Pine Point Rd by the marsh, almost every yard had Robins all over it. My girlfriend told me she had to hit her breaks often today driving to Buxton and back as Robins were everywhere flying low across the roads from lawn to lawn. Robins were calling in the dark when I got home in Portland as well.
Highlight of the day was a Woodcock outside of the break room window at work. The bird was strutting around just a few feet from the window. Aside from that, I wish I had the day off today!
Bird haahd,
Noah Gibb-Portland
