After a couple of years of web cam viewing around the world, I began looking in my own back yard. I am amazed at the number of ospreys that make their homes in this area. The nests on the old Waldo Hancock Bridge have been legendary for 40 plus years; since the Penobscot Narrows Bridge has taken its place the Fish and Wildlife Dept. and DOT have been erecting platforms on poles near the Verona Island end of the bridge and nearly all remain empty. Ha!
That said, the pair at the nest on the other side of Verona Island returned on April 9 and numerous ospreys are returning to their previous nests or looking for new nests all over the mainland at Bucksport - a wide swath of power line towers cutting through the out back is like a super highway flyway for ospreys. My count of new arrivals has passed a dozen so far and it's still early in the season. The familiar kree-kree call is frequently overhead above the town.
I've studied ospreys extensively, but only recently discovered the heavy population in my own home town. I'd love to hear from anyone who can add any information about their experiences and sightings of Maine ospreys. I'm beginning to search for nests that are not human made - not so easy to spot, but sometimes we need a reminder that not all ospreys live on platforms atop utility poles.
