[Maine-birds] Warren to Union - ponds and fields

Like many other places these days, lots of ducks and geese at various spots along Western Road in Warren. A sizeable gathering of birds in the corn stubble fields at Beth's Farm this morning. This is a perennial, but ephemeral,  spring stopover for waterfowl. 100+ CAGOS and 350+ ducks consisting mostly of blacks and mallards and 20 or so wood ducks. The pond behind Beth's greenhouses held another 50-60 ducks. Spring wood duck numbers can briefly reach the 100 range at this site. A few miles further north on RTE 235 in Union, the center of Seven Tree Pond is now ice free: 50-60 ring-necked ducks, common mergs and several adult common loons.

The elver fishing season officially started at noon today, with several nets now in the Georges River in Warren village. On the Medomak in Waldoboro, a group of a half dozen fishermen has been camped onsite for 3-4 days to garner the prime netting locations.
