Blue HIll Falls, Blue HIll, ME
A friend of mine and I spent from 9:15 until Noon-ish at the Falls and
Wharf area. Large raft of eider scanned and re-scanned. Lots of
feeding activity by the eider. No King Eider. Hunters referred to in
earlier post by Kyle Lima came in during our search. They had not seen
it either. They did report that it is legal to take King Eider and
they assured us, I believe quite sincerely, that they would not tell
any of their hunter friends because, as they put it, "the hunters will
all be down here trying to get it." They had bagged a
female Common Eider (Somateria mollissima)
a male Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
female Scoter (Melanitta specific species unknown)
We saw
Common Eider (Somateria mollissima)
Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis)
Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus)
Terns unknown species
Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola)
Red-breasted Mergansers (Mergus serrator)
In Franklin, ME we spotted a male Red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes
carolinus) in the middle of the road. It was fine, It flew into a dead
tree as we slowly approached in the car
