Looks like you got a Common Loon there. It's making the transition to the winter plumage where most loons end up looking pretty similar color-wise, but that bill is nice and thick and lacks the upturned look most Red-throats have, plus Red-throats have a really significant amount of white on their throat and sides of their face (malar/auriculars).

I've been birding the Promenade every morning this week and your email got me pretty excited for another species to tick of my list for that location.

If you do end up running into any rarities down there and see a young guy with binoculars, make sure to point them out!

I really thought I saw two Red-throated Loons at the Eastern Promenade in Portland on November 2nd. The bills looked noticeably smaller than those on the Common Loons. After reviewing my pictures, I am not so sure. Maybe they are Common Loons? Any ID help would be appreciated. 3 photos on Flicker.
