Hi all,
The 7th Annual Bradbury Mountain Spring Hawkwatch, sponsored by Freeport Wild Bird Supply and Nikon Sport Optics, kicks off tomorrow, March 15th at 9:00am.
We welcome back Katrina Fenton from Nashua, New Hamsphire for her second season. Unlike last year with a very early onset to spring, it is doubtful that we missed too many migrants before the count started, so we are very excited for the early part of the season this year. Although winds are forecasted to be out of the WNW tomorrow they should be light enough, along with partly sunny skies, to encourage some birds to move through.
The count will continue every day - except during dense fog, or steady moderate rain or snow - from now through May 15th. Katrina will be happy to answer your questions and help you spot and identify migrants of all types. She does accept hot chocolate as a bribe for personalized attention. Daily counts will be posted to the Hawkcount.org and shared via the Birdhawk Listerve. Counts will be forwarded to Maine-birds as well.
Directions to the hawkwatch, more information, and a link to daily tallies from all years of the project can be found here:
While southwesterly winds are best for our site, very good flights can occur on south and west as well, and we often get birds on all winds, with only northeast being inherently unproductive (although there are exceptions, especially when it is light enough). Time of day is less relevant than weather conditions.
Hope to see you atop "The Brad!"
-Derek
