Observers: Derek Lovitch, Marion Zimmerman, Pat Moynahan, Rob,
Tom Downing
Visitors:
35.
Weather:
A concert of clouds billowing across the sky, holding steady, waning
slightly, then rising to a final crescendo that threatened to wipe out
every trace of blue in the sky. The 5-10 mph northwest wind became more
westerly in the afternoon, dropping to a gentle murmur breathing through
softy moving branches. Temperatures rose to the comfortable upper half of
the 30s.
Raptor Observations:
Turkey Vultures moving by the twos and threes. It won't be long before
their migration is in full swing. An adult Northern Goshawk found a thermal
just past Bradbury, gray back glinting like steel in the afternoon light.
Another gray-toned bird closed out the day; a male Northern Harrier
highlighted against the evergreens, putting in a few more miles before
dark.
Non-raptor Observations:
Singing Black-capped Chickadees brightened the hawkwatch morning with their
sweet "fee-bees" while a Hairy Woodpecker and a Pileated Woodpecker had a
drumming match on the side of the mountain. A Common Garter Snake showed
itself to some afternoon hikers, careless of the fact that spring is
officially still four calendar days away.
Non-raptor migrants:
Canada Goose- 8 passerine sp.- 3
Predictions:
A cold front will be moving through tomorrow morning, bringing brisk
10-20mph northwest winds and temperatures struggling to reach 30 with a
wind chill in the low teens. However, the sun will be shining through
partly cloudy skies, bringing at least the aura of spring. A good down
jacket and a steady arm will be useful for anyone coming to or flying past
the hawkwatch.
