Weather:
Today was one of those March days in New England, equal parts spring and
winter. Breaks of sun melted the snowpack and a few insects could be found
moving about, while thick clouds rolled overhead and the 5-10mph northwest
wind sent brief flurries of snow across the landscape. Temperatures were at
or above freezing for most of the day.
Raptor Observations:
One of the local Bald Eagles was involved in a bit of a territorial dispute
this afternoon, escorting another adult eagle out of the area on no
uncertain terms. The interloper hung around for 20 minutes after the
confrontation, circling in front of the hawkwatch just beyond the forbidden
border.
Non-raptor Observations:
Non-raptor activity was at a low, with few migrants to be seen and the
locals making themselves scarse for much of the day. One American Robin
paused scolding from a treetop before hurrying off.
Non-raptor migrants:
Common Merganzer- 2
American Crow- 3
Predictions:
A bit on the breezy side with a brisk 15-20mph west to northwest wind
gusting to 30mph. Partly cloudy skies will let plenty of sunshine through
to warm temperatures close to 40 degrees. The wind will probably keep
migrants low, but with more of a westerly component, birds anxious to get
back on territory should be willing to move.
