[Maine-birds] Maine Butterfly Survey

Hello all,

2013 will be the seventh (and next to last) year of the Maine Butterfly Survey, a citizen-science project to map the distribution of Maine butterflies and skippers at the township level.  We are always looking for new volunteers and I would like to ask you to consider joining the MBS team. Several members of the Maine-Birds list are MBS volunteers.

The MBS is a voucher-based program so all records must be based on either a collected specimen or a photograph.  Sight records are not acceptable.  All volunteers need to go through a six-hour training session.  We will be holding a training session at Colby College in Waterville on Saturday, April 20 from 9 AM until 3 PM.  The program will consist of lectures on the basic biology of butterflies, an introduction to the taxonomy of the group, and guidelines for record-keeping and specimen preparation.  All participants will be given a handbook, supplies, and a free lunch in one of the Colby dining halls.  All you need to bring is a notebook and your enthusiasm.

If you would like to reserve a spot in the workshop, please email me at your earliest convenience.  All workshop participants must be at least 18 years old.

We have learned a tremendous amount already about our butterfly fauna.  Three new species were added to the state list in 2012: Short-tailed Swallowtail, Long-tailed Skipper and Fiery Skipper.  The Short-tailed Swallowtail was previously only known from the eastern Canadian provinces so the 2012 Maine record represents a new national record!

Best,

Herb
