Comments: Common Murre (Uria aalge) found in the narrows of Somes Sound . Driving along I realized there was a large bodied Alcid not to far from the road. Sure enough great photos of Common Murre... Perhaps the first one I have seen in the Sound. This January 29 we found flocks of Common Murre, Thick-billed Murre, Razorbills and Black Guillemot in large numbers from Mount Desert Island to beyond Mount Desert Rock 24 miles off shore. It is not surprising, based on these observations, that we are seeing so many Alcids this winter in the local waters directly around MDI. This has not been a "typical" year perhaps due to large quantities of food available to the typically pelagic species. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.514943165214898.1073741827.148692675173284&type=1 photos
