Mount Desert Island Birds:  Red-headed Woodpecker Continues

Douglas Point Emery Cove, Hancock, US-ME
Mar 22, 2013 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM
Protocol: Stationary
Comments: Bill Townsend and I spent some time observing the Red-headed Woodpecker this morning. We first saw it at the feeder, then back to the roost tree. We spent a little time coaxing it into the open finally for some excellent shots that Bill got from his vantage point. I noticed that the Pileated Wood peckers have been excavating hard just above and to the north of the RHWP hole. Jokingly wonder if they do that while he is inside the cavity. The bird continues to look healthy. Obviously still using the feeder. We are eight days short of 3 months since this bird started spending time here. Bill and mused whether this bird will move on when the testosterone kicks in?? Cold wind blowing and 27 F Sunny. This bird began here on December 30, 2012 and continues today.

Subject: [Maine-birds] mergs in Kennebec

Looks like the Common Mergansers are starting their spring raft-up. I saw a few hundred in the Kennebec River between Gardiner and South Gardiner a few minutes ago.

Single Pine Grosbeak and several Common Redpolls still at our backyard feeder in Gardiner today.

Also saw a Northern Shrike in South Gardiner yesterday.
