[Maine-birds] Re: RFI: Searching for the Little Egret

I see Rob McConnell's good description of North and South Meadows and Providence Ave, and can add info here on Tidewater Farm (actually a demonstration garden, north of the other sites mentioned). From it, you get an excellent view of the bay.  The day we saw the Little Egret there (3 weeks ago), it was quite close at one point.

To reach this site from US1 in Falmouth, turn onto Clearwater Drive (near Walmart) and take the first right, onto Farm Gate Rd.  There is a small sign that says Tidewater Farm.  Continue through the expensive housing development until you see another such sign pointing left on a dirt road.  Follow that dirt road a short distance to its end and park in the spaces on the left.  Walk between the shed and an abandoned house along a mowed path with a Portland Trails sign.  Go out to the end of the path to get the best view.  Our sighting there was about 1-2 hr after low tide.  Otherwise, it is either full of water or just a big mudflat.

Best of luck!

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are making a trip from western New York to Hancock, Maine to visit family next week and we wanted to try for the Falmouth Little Egret, assuming it is still in the area. I see that it has been found in four different locations:

North Meadow at Gilsland Farm
South Meadow at Gilsland Farm
The end of Providence Avenue
Tidewater Farm

On Google Maps it looks like the North Meadow trail is accessed from the end of Walcott Ave. Is this correct and is it okay to park on the street there?

The end of Providence Avenue looks very residential. Is there a particular spot where people view from and are the residents okay with birders being there?

Finally, where is Tidewater Farm? I haven't been able to find that on Google Maps.

We won't have a lot of time for the search so I was hoping someone could recommend how we should go about it - for example, try spot A first, spot B second, etc. Is the bird present at these spots at high tide or low tide or somewhere in between?

Thanks in advance for any tips and information.

Good birding!
Willie
