[Maine-birds] Ocean Loons and an eagle.

22 Oct 2016
Over the past week we have seen a increase in the numbers of Common Loons in the Frenchman Bay - Mt. Desert area.
On our 16 mile, two hour trip around the bay ( now just twice daily) we have counted:
10/17 6 Common Loons in various plumages
10/18 18
10/19 24
10/20 28 plus one Red-throated Loon.
We have one particularly "tame" loon at the old Bluenose Ferry terminal that swims under the dock and the boat, and often surfaces within 10 ft. It seems to be feeding on Green Crabs but in one case had a small flounder which in managed to swallow with great difficulty. All of this much to the delight of many of the tourists on the boat. When they get a frame-filling picture on their cell phone camera of a loon with a crab they (the tourists) are extremely excited.

10/19 we had an adult Bald Eagle flying between Jordan and Ironbound I. carrying a 3-4 ft. tree branch.
