Weather:
Today was an exceptionally pleasant day to start the count season. Temps were very mild, hovering in the low 40s. Sunshine was fairly abundant to start the day, with increasing but light cloud cover, which by day's end had blanketed the sky. The final hour of the day the wind picked up to a light breeze and switched from a mostly northern direction to southeast, cooling things down a bit. Visibility was good for the entire day, with minor heat distortion when using our optics.

Raptor Observations:
What a great start! Pretty big numbers with good diversity of species. The first hour was very quiet but by hour two things really got going. Turkey Vultures made up a good portion of the early migrants with Eagles close behind. The Eagles are already proving to be a difficult species to keep track of. Many immature birds with distinctive plumage coloring or missing flight feathers were seen on many occasions in multiple locations, roaming far and wide. At one point we had nine Eagles visible in one field of view. Other birds of note were an immature Northern Goshawk which appeared close to the summit, to our west. A little while after that we had a great look at a Peregrine Falcon which lingered for a bit before heading inland.

Non-raptor Observations:
Welcome to the 2022 Bradbury Hawkwatch season! Thanks to Derek and Jeannette Lovitch of Freeport Wild Bird Supply who sponsor this site for inviting me back for yet another season of hawk counting. I am excited to be here and look forward to the familiar faces from years past and meet some new birders as well. Anyone interested in joining me at the summit to help search the skies or ask questions, please don't hesitate. The summit trail is the most direct route to the summit and it is currently pretty free and clear of ice, with the exception of the first 50 yards or so. There is mud. A total of 27 species were seen or heard from the summit including: 1161 Canada Geese 240 Blackbird spp 148 Red-winged Blackbirds 131 Common Grackles 22 American Robins 12 duck spp 4 Common Mergansers 4 American Goldfinch 4 Purple Finch 1 European Starling 2 Eastern Bluebirds

Predictions:
A bit of precipitation is predicted for this evening and overnight but looks like it should be wrapped up before the count starts. Temperatures look like they could be similar to today with highs in the mid 40's. Early clouds could keep thermal production low in the morning hours but skies should be clearing throughout the day. With light winds from the south southwest, tomorrow is shaping up nicely.
