[Maine-birds] Monhegan in March

Hi All,

Just returned from a long weekend on Monhegan Island. Birding highlights included:

-Common Goldeneye - a new species for my island list
-Long-tailed Ducks - many in rafts in harbor and near the Ducks
-Great Cormorants - those beautiful turquoise eyes!
-Peregrine Falcon - a pair that Donna said has been around all winter
-Iceland Gull - very white bird, seems to have been around all winter; a sternwoman showed me a photo she took (with her phone) of one landing on the lobster boat
-E. Phoebe - 2 birds at Fish and Swim Beach, feeding on the swarms of kelp flies
-Brown Creeper - singing in Cathedral Woods. Does it get better than that? See below.
-House Wren - singing incessantly near Donna's house, wicked early!
-Eastern Bluebird - at least one male - several reportedly around all winter
-Am. Robin - dozens and dozens of birds all over town, including 1 very cool-looking leucistic bird
-Gray Catbird - heard calling at the back of the Meadow, wicked early!
-Song Sparrow - dozens, everywhere
-Fox Sparrow - 1 singing bird, the most beautiful song ever in the spring fog!
-Savannah Sparrow - 1 "Ipswich" type at Pebble Beach
-Purple Finch - a few, singing

A Snowy Owl was reported out there as recently as last week.
Several people have recently heard/seen Am. Woodcocks, but I wimped out on the cold, foggy, rainy nights, so missed out. This time.

As we left this morning, the ferry went around the backside of Manana and the local pair of Bald Eagles were perched on the roof of the old Coast Guard station. Nice send off.
