[Maine-birds] Bay-breasted Warblers

A couple folks from Florida wanted me to find them a whole bunch of birds in the Moosehead area today. Here were the top three surprises for the day:

1)      A Wood Thrush singing on the B&A Railroad Bed North Road just up the road from the wetland in Shirley. If I remove one shoe, I can count the number of Wood Thrushes I have heard above Bangor on my fingers and one toe. This one was singing in close proximity to a Swainson’s Thrush. I don’t think I’ve ever heard them simultaneously, given their preference for dissimilar habitat.

2)      The East Outlet road on the west side of Moosehead Lake was loaded with Bay-breasted Warblers. There is a 1.5 mile section of road that follows the river before reaching a clear cut on Plum Creek land. Along the second half of this stretch, Bay-breasted was THE most common bird encountered – at least ten, maybe a dozen.

3)      Listening to MPBN on the drive to Moosehead this morning, and hearing a poem written by noted author, poet, and Maine birder Kristen Lindquist being read by Garrison Keillor on “The Writer’s Almanac.”
