[Maine-birds] Barred Owl question

I have heard a barred owl somewhat regularly near my house, and last night I heard at least 2, possibly three of them.  If they are resident in the trees near my house, where/how would they likely spend the day?  If I wanted to scan around with my binos, would they likely be in a hole in a tree, on a branch near the trunk, decid. or conif., 15' or 30' up, etc?  Or are they less picky than that?  I would love to try to catch a glimpse of one but I don't know where to begin looking, and with a heavily wooded yard, I can't imagine being able to spot one in the day time without a better idea of their habits.

Thanks!
