Phippsburg, Maine, Map 6 Totman Cove
just trying to "keep up with the Jones" in my fledgling reporting here,
RB nuthatches, a week and a half out, scrambling around bark on jack pines and busy with black oil at feeders
Northern Cardinals, three fledges, cute as can be being fed mostly by DAd showing them the feeder ropes, out almost two weeks
Chickadees, piles.
Yellow warblers,
Yellow throated warblers
Amercian Redstarts
Catbirds
Tree swallows,
all dragging youngsters around by the hair, yelling at them in the bird supermarkets, giving them time outs and threatening "When your father gets home you are in REALLY big trouble, buster!" honest. I've heard 'em.
A neighbor who has a barn and has an annual population of Barn Swallows reported something interesting to me, as follows. First off, she is reliable, very. She heard the swallows screaming then saw about 25 adults swarming around the open barn door, obviously upset, histerical. A Sharp-shinned hawk was zooming around. It perched breifly then took off. The swallows settled down. But then, the youngesters in the nests closest to the barn door started falling out and dropping dead on the floor. Every day now, there are 1-3 dead ones on the floor since the Sharpie incident. Curious.
I found a not quite fledgling on Small Point a few days ago. it had fallen from the nest in I'm guessing one of the big gusts of wind whicch had swept through. I could not find the nest nor saw nor heard any adults around. It was the smallest baby bird I' had ever seen, slightly bigger than my wedding band (size 5). It had secondary feathers, but could not fly. It was very vocal and lively. For a while. It died shortly afterward. I think though will never know for sure that it was a Gold Crowned kinglet. RIP.
