This evening, right around dusk (6:15ish), I was driving in my back field to try to determine what the heck was scaring the horse tonight. I came upon a smallish, buff-brown (streaky... didn't get a great sense of coloring pattern - kind of plain, blended into the grass) bird. Long beak (longer than the head - kind of dagger-like); 9+ inches; short, stubby body; very short tail (flicked it up at me once, white underside). After searching through my Sibley's for quite a while tonight, I'm thinking it was either a Common Snipe or an American Woodcock (leaning towards this). Since I'm not sure and I've never seen one before, which is more likely to have been in a field (short grass) at dusk in Caribou?
Thanks for your help! Sorry, the photo I took didn't come out well due to the low light. (And, no, I never found what alarmed the horse.)
