Hi William,
I have seen these birds swoop around upper bays ... than out to sea they fly contented to have seen the land I suspect ..... and find a bit of food perhaps . Some day we may see more Pelagic species utilizing the intercoastal waters if we can all pull together to develop and regrow our intercoastal fisheries.... once great before the fisheries crash in 1972.....

Subject: [Maine-birds] NOGAs in upper Penobscot Bay
Late post, but while lobstering on Saturday morning, we had three adult Northern Gannets in upper Penobscot Bay.
All came up the west side of the bay and flew by Turtle Head, which is the north end of Islesboro.
This is the first time that I have had this species this far "inland", but I suspect that they do come up here from time to time.
