Weather:
For the first time this season, one could stand at the hawkwatch all day
and not need a jacket. With the passing of last night's front, skies
cleared and the sun quickly shot temperatures up into the 60's. The sky was
clad in varying amounts of lacey white for the rest of the day, pushed
along by a light WSW wind.
Raptor Observations:
It didn't take long before thermals shot birds high overhead. Ospreys were
barely visible without binoculars, and smaller birds were little better
than pepper flecks. One of the local Red-tailed Hawks had a few immature
birds to usher out of the territory, and two Red-shouldered Hawks had a
brief squabble over the summit.
Non-raptor Observations:
A few more first-of-years made their appearance at the hawkatch today. A
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker shot though first thing in the morning, followed a
few minutes later by a Palm Warbler. The afternoon brought the first Common
Loon hoping to find open water somewhere inland.
Non-raptor Migrants:
Double-crested Cormorant- 8 Canada Goose- 73
Common Merganser- 5 American Black Duck- 17
Mallard- 2 anas sp.- 12 duck sp.- 1
Great Blue Heron- 1 Killdeer- 2 Tree Swallow- 54
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker- 1 Northern Flicker- 22
Eastern Bluebird- 2 American Robin- 433
Red-winged Blackbird- 80 Common Grackle- 138
blackbird sp.- 183 American Goldfinch- 4
Purple Finch- 5 passerine sp.- 16
Predictions:
Our weather continues to mirror Camelot with rain at night followed by
sunny days. Tomorrow the wind will be light out of the southwest,
increasing to 10-15mph in the afternoon. The sky will quickly clear,
leading to a partly cloudy afternoon with temperatures around 60F. This
should be a great weekend for hawkwatching!
