[Maine-birds] MDI Sandhill Crane & Lesser Black-backed Gull

Today was a good bird day here on Mount Desert Island . . . and I hardly spent any time birding.

Heading home from town after swim lessons with six-year-old Anouk, I swung by the Norway Drive farm fields. All the rain had flooded local creeks, including Northeast Creek. Lots of ducks, including a Blue-winged Teal. Three tall birds immediately jumped out at me. Sandhill Cranes!!! My first for MDI. And pretty darned cool birds!!!

This was my second cool bird of the day. Earlier, heading into town to pickup my daughter from 1st grade, with tide rising, Hulls Cove beach was littered with gulls, per usual. This time, though, there were far more Great Black-backed Gulls than normal. One stood out: smaller and grayer. A quick stop quickly yielded yellow legs. Lesser Black-backed Gull!

An Eastern Phoebe at Hulls Cove was a first-of-year bird for me, too.
