The lagoons at the Sanford Wastewater Treatment facility have fewer birds than normal. The ice began to disappear early this week. That day droves of ducks and gulls were observed. A day later the masses were gone--- just a few birds present the past 2 days…most concentrated in the pond to the right.
The relatively low numbers of diving waterfowl and the lack of loons, grebe, herons or osprey hints at a low fish supply. In spite of the warm conditions yesterday we observed only a 2 frogs. Although we did not witness other signs of a die off, perhaps the long period with snow covered the ice may have significantly depleted oxygen levels for life in the water.Maine birds mailing list
