the pond began to open up last week--when I came back from town on Wednesday there was a real patch of open water on the eastern side of the pond though there was still a lot of ice off my shore. On Thursday, the open area was larger and I heard the first loon. Yesterday, I heard and saw two loons across the pond and heard loon calls from the southern end of the pond as well. Today the pond is almost entirely open (just a large floating island of ice) and the loons are calling,. also heard and saw a belted kingfisher. the geese are coming in and beginning to vocalize in various ways.
lots of other birds in the past week--at least two woodcocks at dusk, two purple finches, a phoebe today, and the usual complement of other birds. rwbbs and grackles swooping in and out, one starling, still just one flicker, hairy and downy woodpeckers, and the red-bellied woodpecker. the cardinals are calling constantly--lovely--Maine birds mailing list
