We began our trip by stopping at Mace’s Pond, which gave up about 20 Bufflehead, and then immediately headed over to the middle school in Rockland to look for the Cattle Egrets which were there for parts of at least three days before the cold snap. Unfortunately, they were not present.
The pond across from the turnout at Weskeag Marsh yielded 2 Hooded Merganser hens, swimming with a pair of Canada Geese and a pair of Mallards. The main part of the marsh gave us several Great Blue Herons, and a few Green-winged Teal, but the best was a single Glossy Ibis working the edges of the front panne. Nice plumage, too. Downstream at the “gig,” I counted 62 Bufflehead, 9 Red-breasted Mergansers, a single Common Loon, and a distant Broad-winged Hawk which did not appear to be a migrant.
Moving back towards Owls Head, we found an American Kestrel at first perched (teed-up shrike-like) then hovering in the field opposite the airport at the end of the Dublin Rd.
Finally, 2 Iceland Gulls continue at the impoundment at Owls Head harbor.
