Cloe Chunn of Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition and I co-led our annual bird walk this morning for BBWC's Bird Week on Coastal Mountains Land Trust's Ducktrap River Preserve off Route 52 in Lincolnville. Beautiful morning to be on the trail!
We heard/saw 36 species total (according to my tally, at least), including 11 species of warbler (Black-throated Green W and Ovenbirds ruled the woods). While the black flies were swarming, warbler diversity in particular seemed down this year, maybe because it's 3-4 days earlier than we usually do this walk.
Highlights included:
Winter Wren - 3 FOY
Least Flycatcher - 6 FOY
Veery - 2-3 FOY
Eastern Wood-pewee - 1-2 FOY
Baltimore Oriole - 1 singing near trailhead
Blackburnian Warbler - 12-15 in the hemlocks and white pines
Black-throated Blue Warbler - 6-8
Wild Turkey - 1 heard
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 overhead
Common Raven - 1 pair, cavorting (notable to me b/c ravens were the theme of Paul's and my wedding 14 years ago today) (and ravens are cool)
Osprey - 2 patrolling the river along with...
Belted Kingfisher - 1, leading us to wonder if the alewifes are running
Also notable:
Garter Snake
Red-backed Salamander
lingering Trout Lilies
Notable miss this year: Scarlet Tanager. We've almost always had these on this walk, in the mature forest along the river. Also dipped on Nashville and Magnolia Warblers for the first time in years.
And too early yet, apparently, for Painted Trillium, which is usually in bloom for this walk.
