Hello all,
Derek and I spent the late afternoon on the Eastern Rd Trail in Scarborough on the high tide. It was absolutely gorgeous and the birding was nearly as incredible as the evening. It began with a SHORT-EARED OWL, rising high and circling out over the marsh and ended with an impressive Oct 10th total of 11 species of shorebird, including a juvenile LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER. However, the bird of the afternoon was a rare SEASIDE SPARROW that we found pushed up against the trail at the peak of the very high tide.
The impressive roster of highlights, in arbitrary order of significance was as follows:
1 SEASIDE SPARROW
1 SHORT-EARED OWL
1 juvenile LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER
1 STILT SANDPIPER
1-2 "INTERIOR/BAY" NELSON'S SPARROWS
1 Least Sandpiper (late)
1 Lapland Longspur
3 White-rumped Sandpipers
3 Saltmarsh Sparrows
4 Nelson's Sparrows
8 unidentified "Sharp-tailed" Sparrows
17 Semipalmated Sandpipers
6 Pectoral Sandpipers
1 female Greater Scaup
2 Lesser Yellowlegs
3 Semipalmated Plovers
68 Dunlin
13 Snowy Egrets
27 Great Egrets
14 Greater Yellowlegs
13 Black-bellied Plovers
2 Merlins
4 Great Blue Herons
