I always look for the Sandhills on Rt 8 in Norridgwock as they nest in the wetland near Smithfield village.
Finally there they were in the big field right before the horse farm on the right as you are headed to Norridgwock Friday mid afternoon.
2 adults and a juvenile. Fun to see finally.
I have seen sandhills in my area (Belgrade) this summer in various locations:
The fields on 135 by Belgrade stream, the boat landing at Messalonskee Lake on rt 27, and the wetland at North Bay on Great Pond (2 adults and a juvenile).
Also checked for the loon family (1 chick successfully raised) in the kettle hole across from the old Belgrade town office. They had moved on to wintering grounds.
Loons are still at Mud Cove Moosehead lake as of today. 7 in a raft, and 1 single one with much winter plumage - how do you know if it is a juvenile or early winter plumage?
