[Maine-birds] Purple Sandpipers/Dickcissel-Wells-11/13

A friend and I found the Dickcissel far back in the low shrubs, near the dumpsters, at the Cannon Sweatshirt store on Rte. 1 in Wells (York Cty.) today (Friday), just after noon. The wind seemed to drive the dozens of House Sparrows along the hedge row to the back. At the far end, she spotted the/a Dickcissel. Yellow on the white front, a black spot on the throat, and the rusty shoulder patch were the only field marks we could see, as it was hidden by yellow leaves and some vines. To my eye it appeared like a yellow streak down the front. I didn't get a good side view of the head. We  each saw it twice. We did not see more than one. Would like the ID of the hawk that seems to hang out there for a meal.

Taking our lunches to the ocean at Wells Beach (via Mile Rd., then a right turn,) we watched the strong surf. Not far out, on the rocks were two groups of Purple Sandpipers, perhaps a dozen all together. It was a delight to see them, noting their slightly decurved bicolored bills, yellow legs, plain dark breast with spotted area below, feeding on the the rocks after outgoing tide. What a treat! Surf Scoters were far out, near the highest spouting waves.

These were welcome sights and invigorating weather for me, having just come back from  two months in Oakland, California.
