Re: [Maine-birds] September 17-18 GREAT SKUA long GOM trip

Hey Peter,

That is not fair.
Comparing your once-a-year spectacular unbeatable dedicated pelagic birding trip against the commercial public daily ferry that crosses between Portland ME and Yarmouth NS is just NOT a fair comparison!  For example, how many trucks, buses and passengers can your smaller ship carry??  You can not beat that!   (-:

Joking aside, we frankly assumed you guys had already filled your 9/17 boat, and we deliberately did not start any notification about our CAT ferry trip until just two days ago!  We allowed ourselves only ONE WEEK of public notification before our 9/17 sailing.

Your trip is truly great, and we strongly recommend it to everyone:

We even recommend your trip in our webpage, near the bottom, in the section called "This is a public ship".

We are really not trying to compete with your unbeatable September pelagic trip, but we are trying
1)  to see as many Skuas and other seabirds as possible, on the public ferry, 7 days a week,
2)  to find the best locations on the CAT ferry for bird/whale viewing and photography,
3)  to get more CAT passengers more interested in the amazing wildlife and ecosystem of the GOM,
4)  to get more passenger traffic onto the CAT ferry, to benefit the people and economies of Nova Scotia and Maine.
5)  to work with Bay Ferries Ltd to get the most science value from the daily CAT crossings.

We really wish you Good Luck on your trip this coming Saturday (lots of our friends will be on your ship).

And,  we will see what we can do to match your amazing record of EIGHT skuas during our two GOM crossings next weekend!  (-:

Best regards,
Tom  Robben

Conversely, you might want to consider the ME Aud Bar Harbor pelagic on Sat, 17 Sep.  We cover 150+ n-miles actually looking for birds and saw 8+ Great Skuas last year and we have a super fast dedicated cat boat that is fast enough to chase down skuas, jaegers, etc…

If you're after a spectacular seabird experience, well the choice is obvious.

See ME Audubon website for particulars.

But good luck on the ferry.

Best, Peter
