[Maine-birds] Corvids (Crows) during Covid

To all of you that have been yearning for details about the staging and roosting of the American and Fish Crows this winter that are along the Merrimack River in Lawrence MA, THEY ARE THERE AND LOOKING FOR ADMIRERS! Folks from New Hampshire, Maine and across Massachusetts have seen this wonder in years past.

First, I do believe that you can safely watch the staging and roosting from your own car.  Bob and I have already gone out in our car about a dozen times this fall and early winter with great success.   A couple of times someone in our "bubble" has joined us, and others who  have joined us in their own car have enjoyed the spectacle.  Communicating by cell phone or walkie-talkie to other cars works fine so we can guide and explain (we Hope!) what we are seeing. No one gets exposed to any viruses that way and this is another activity you can enjoy safely during this horrid pandemic.

Yesterday, December 4th, was SPECTACULAR – the most spectacular this year.  I still now in my fourth year of regular watching ( 300 nights) can not help uttering "Oh, my God" when they continue to demonstrate their unique behavior. It just takes your breath away. I think I saw 18,000+ crows last night coming into the final staging area – wave upon wave came in from the northwest and then the west across a sunset lit sky. Then they moved right across in front of us under the cover of early darkness into the roost.

Each time we have gone, the pattern of staging and roosting has changed, the numbers have grown so in the past week, and the direction they come in from keeps changing. Oh, my you must just see it yourself. "Where's Waldo" continues to apply.

Let me know if you wish to see this amazing phenomenon. Check the weather reports for sunny late afternoons.  Plan to be in Lawrence an hour before sunset and to stay until 45 minutes after sunset. Let me know if you would like us to guide you with you in your own car – new email – dana.fox1939@gmail.com – and we will be there.

I can give you directions if you want to try it on your own.

I have just had an article about the staging and roosting of the Lawrence crows appear in the November issue of the American Birding Association's Birding magazine which I would be happy to send you a PDF if you wish.

Please send me information about any local roosts that you observe and any information about migrating crows.
