[Maine-birds] MIKI - False Alarm

For those of you who got the eBird alert of a potential Mississippi Kite in Washington Co. I want to apologize. After staking out the same location for another hour I was able to locate the bird in question for a better look. It was a BLACK TERN hawking insects over the pond. The angle of the light, and distance, denied me a good look at the bill, and the overall whiteness of the chest should have made me hesitate.

Had it been indeed a MIKI I would have loved to shared the sighting with anyone around, so just in case, I posted it to eBird.

The post has since been deleted. I have relocated the bird for some very close looks in better light. I was not very familiar with Black Terns before. I am now.

I apologize for any miles I may have put on anyone's car. I will eat my three-tier cake of abject humility in the corner now.

Thanks & Apologies,

Ian Carlsen
