[Maine-birds] Phippsburg Phinch Poundage

Phippsburg,Maine map 6, Totman Cove

Pine siskins (Phinches) persist, 100 or so birds at my feeders an my nearest neighbor's concurrently. We talk on the phone and conduct concurrent counts, synchronize our watches, wear ski masks in the middle of the day, sunglasses and other espionage disguises. Makes siskin counting much more fun. But, seriously - the birds are going through so much seed that I decided to weigh the seed. They are eating about 8 pounds of seed ever 24 hours. Do the math. This is becoming a financial problem. And, that does no include the suet, which they are also eating. My husband is hosing down the deck every day because the guano is tremendous. Never thought I'd say this, but I really hope they move on soon. Where are the Sharp Shinned hawks when you really need them?
