This morning Chuck Homler and I got out to a few different spots with something rewarding at each. First, in Saco, we had nice, close looks from Water Street at the immature GREAT CORMORANT that has been a regular at the Saco River. Also had one RING-NECKED DUCK and the BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.
On our way to Scarborough, we spotted a sharp-looking adult BALD EAGLE perched along the road, and getting out to take photos of him, we also spooked up a MERLIN. We met up with Rob Romano at the Yacht Club at Prout's Neck and enjoyed scrumptious scope looks at the stunning adult male KING EIDER. The bird was about a quarter mile straight out, usually staying around the vicinity of the bright green buoy. He never got in near enough for good photos, unfortunately. Another highlight was a RAZORBILL who was actively feeding close to shore... we had most excellent views of him.
Pine Point was swimming in loons... at least 40 or so COMMON LOONS were present, with bunches seen nearly everywhere we turned. We had all the regular water birds, with the highlight of an adult PEREGRINE FALCON perched out on a mud bank, scanning the terrain for snacks.
On our way back home, we had roadside looks at both an adult COOPER'S and SHARP-SHINNED HAWK. Finally, with a stop at the scrubby patch near the OA Performance Center on Lund Road in Saco, we watched a dozen female/immature male PINE GROSBEAKS feeding avidly in a fruit-laden crabapple tree along with the robins. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning! :)
Happy birding,
