[Maine-birds] Northern Maine Birds: Barnacle Goose NO, Eurasian Wigeon, Lesser Black-backed Gull

Yesterday, I received a late report of a Barnacle Goose (complete with photos).  The goose was seen at the mill pond in Limestone back on October 29th.  The bird was an apparent one-day-wonder and was not seen there again.

Despite the low probability of finding the goose, I spent some time in the area today and checked through several flocks of geese adding up to about 5,000 birds.  I had no luck re-finding the bird.

I did get a good consolation prize in the form of a young drake Eurasian Wigeon up at Long Lake.  The bird was feeding with several late American Wigeon in the mouth of McLean Brook where it empties into the lake at Sinclair. A picture of the Euro Widge and the rest of my Sinclair list is here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15620386

Up on the north end of the lake in St. Agatha was a late lingering adult Lesser Black-backed Gull.  The gull was feeding with several hundred Herring and Great Black-backeds in a potato field that was being plowed.  The only other noteworthy birds here was a Northern Pintail, 30+ Common Goldeneyes and a larger flock of Purple Finches.

The future is looking grim for waterfowl watching in northern Maine.  Snow is predicted for the next few days and high temperatures will only be in the 30's...
